Australia Day Foods Pets Love (And Ones to Avoid)

January 21, 2025

Australia Day is almost here! It’s the perfect time to fire up the BBQ, and enjoy some lamingtons. But before you share your celebratory feast with your four-legged companions, it’s essential to know which Aussie classics are safe for pets and which should be kept far away from their bowls. Let’s dive into the dos and don’ts for a pet-friendly Australia Day.

Unsafe Foods: What to Keep Off Your Pet’s Plate

1. Grapes and Raisins

A seemingly innocent addition to fruit salads, grapes and raisins are extremely dangerous for dogs and can cause kidney failure. While cats may not have the same reaction, it’s better to err on the side of caution.

2. Macadamia Nuts

A beloved ingredient in Aussie desserts, macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs. Symptoms like vomiting, lethargy, and even tremors can occur. Better safe than sorry—keep them out of reach.

3. Sausages (Snags)

Sausages are a BBQ favourite, but their high fat, salt, and spice content make them unsuitable for pets. While they may beg for a bite, it’s best to say no.

4. Lamingtons and Pavlova

These sweet treats are an Aussie staple but are loaded with sugar, chocolate, and other ingredients that are harmful to pets. Keep them on your own plate.

5. Chocolate

Whether it’s in the form of Tim Tams or any other chocolatey dessert, chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to pets. Dogs and cats alike should steer clear.

6. Meat Pies and Sausage Rolls

While these savoury delights scream Australia Day, they’re often packed with onions, garlic, and unhealthy fats that can be harmful to pets. Save these for your human guests.

7. Vegemite

A quintessential Aussie spread, Vegemite is far too salty for pets. They likely won’t enjoy it as much as you do anyway!

Safe Foods: Treats Your Pets Can Enjoy

1. Plain Cooked Chicken

Unseasoned, plain chicken is a fantastic protein option for both cats and dogs. Just avoid any marinades, spices, or oils.

2. Carrots

Crunchy, healthy, and low-calorie, carrots are a hit with dogs and might even tempt adventurous cats. Serve them raw or cooked, and unseasoned for a nutritious snack.

3. Green Beans

Another low-calorie treat, green beans are excellent for pets. Dogs often enjoy them raw or cooked, while curious cats might take a nibble.

4. Apples (Without Seeds and Core)

Apples are a refreshing summer treat loaded with vitamins A and C. Just be sure to remove the seeds and core, as they can be harmful.

5. Pumpkin (Plain)

Cooked, plain pumpkin is a fantastic option for digestion. Remove the skin to avoid any digestive issues, but feel free to include the seeds in moderation. Leave the pumpkin scones for the humans, though!
